GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING

Johannes Vermeer Dutch, 1665

Oil on canvas 44.5 × 39 cm (17½ × 15⅜ in.)

ABOUT THIS WORK

One of the most enigmatic paintings in art history, Girl with a Pearl Earring captures a fleeting moment of intimacy and mystery. The subject — identified only as "the Girl" — turns toward us with a direct gaze, her lips parted as if mid-conversation, her expression both inviting and unknowable.

Vermeer's mastery of light transforms the canvas into a luminous jewel. The pearl earring, rendered with singular brilliance, catches the eye and draws us into the sitter's world. The exotic turban and dark background elevate this from a simple portrait to something more: a meditation on beauty, desire, and the power of a single glance.

Who was she? Vermeer never tells. Her identity remains one of art's enduring mysteries — a deliberately kept secret that has captivated viewers for over three centuries.

THE ARTIST

Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) was a Dutch Golden Age master known for his intimate domestic scenes and unparalleled use of light. Working in Delft, he produced fewer than 40 paintings in his lifetime, many of which are now among the world's most beloved works. Despite his genius, Vermeer remained largely unknown outside his lifetime, only rediscovered in the 19th century.
