Ernst Haeckel (German, 1834–1919)

Nepenthaceae (Kannenpflanzen), 1904

Lithographic print

From Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature)

In Plate 62, Ernst Haeckel turns his obsessive eye toward the exotic and predatory world of Nepenthaceae, commonly known as tropical pitcher plants. Haeckel deliberately emphasizes the dramatic, carnivorous anatomy of these plants, transforming their passive trapping mechanisms into active, dynamic characters. Swelling pouches with mottled crimson interiors hang alongside heavy, ribbed rims and elegant overhead lids designed to shed rain. What elevates this composition is the kinetic energy of the support structures; Haeckel exaggerates the plant’s climbing tendrils into a chaotic, looping baroque framework that fills the negative space. By grouping these diverse species into a singular, tightly wound cluster, Haeckel highlights a favorite theme of his Darwinian outlook: adaptive radiation. The print serves as a visual celebration of how a single ancestral leaf design could warp, stretch, and evolve into such specialized, macabre instruments of survival.
