The Starry Night Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853–1890) June 1889 · Oil on canvas · 73.7 × 92.1 cm · The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Painted in a single surge of creative energy during van Gogh's voluntary stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, The Starry Night depicts the view from his room window just before sunrise — with the addition, from imagination, of an idealised village nestled in the valley below. The night sky dominates the canvas with an almost violent vitality: eleven stars and a luminous crescent moon are engulfed in great swirling currents of blue, indigo and white, as though the heavens themselves are in a state of ecstatic turbulence. A towering cypress tree — a species long associated in European tradition with mourning and eternity — surges from the foreground like a dark flame, connecting earth and sky. Van Gogh made the painting without a live model, working from memory and emotion, and considered it a failure. He was wrong. Acquired by MoMA in 1941, it has since become arguably the most recognised painting in the world — an image that somehow transforms anguish into wonder, and loneliness into something that feels, against all reason, like consolation.
