Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858) 1857 · Woodblock print (ukiyo-e) · approx. 37 × 25 cm

Published in 1857 as part of Hiroshige's celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, this woodblock print is widely regarded as the masterpiece of the collection. It depicts a sudden summer downpour — known in Japanese as a yūdachi, or "evening descent of the thunder god" — over the Shin-Ōhashi Bridge spanning the Sumida River in Edo, present-day Tokyo. Figures scramble across the bridge seeking shelter beneath hats and mats, while a solitary boatman below remains serenely indifferent to the storm. Hiroshige renders the torrential rain through overlapping diagonal lines of black and grey, creating a remarkable sense of movement and atmosphere. So admired was this composition that Vincent van Gogh made an oil copy of it, now held in Amsterdam. The print stands as one of the defining achievements of the ukiyo-e tradition.
